Welcome to VILNIUS, the capital of Lithuania. This city which is located between the rivers Neris and Vilnelė was granted with the name of the capital city from the year 1323 when the Lithuanian Grand Duke Gediminas wrote in his letters addressed to the merchants and craftsmen from the Western Europe and invited them to come and settle in the  “capital city Vilnius”.

Vilnius is the largest city of the country and the centre of economics and politics. The capital city is home to around 0.5 million people. Vilnius covers the area of 392 sq. m. Only one fifth part of the city is covered by buildings while the remaining part is covered by greenery and waters. Due to this reason Vilnius is reasonably called as one of the greenest capital cities in Europe. Historical centre of Vilnius (the Old Town) is one of the hugest in the Eastern Europe (360 ha) and the most valuable historical and cultural heritage of the capital city is

located there. The Old Town has around 1.5 thousand buildings from various periods and all European architectural styles can be found there. Although Vilnius is called the City of Baroque, here you can also find Gothic, Renaissance, Classicism and Jugend buildings. The main accents of the city which are also the symbols of the capital of Lithuania is Gediminas Castle and Cathedral Square. In the year 1994 because of its uniqueness the Old Town of Vilnius was inscribed on the UNESCO World Cultural Heritage List.
